Ostrich is Avestruz in spanish too and that remind me of another one: Rhea: ñandú And spider is also translated "araña" here, but we have a specie of tarántula that we called "araña pollito" ( something like "chick spider" ) and a kind of catterpillar that we named "gata peluda" (which literally means hairy female cat" )

one of my favourite animal names here is the italian name of the wild boar: Cinghiale. a word that summons fear and the idea of power and destruction in many people's mind. and then, the wels catfish here is called Siluro, which is the same name given to the torpedoes fired by submarines (ironically, these fish have similar destructive power) |

a difference i've noticed with english naming of animals is that while many similar anymals share part of the name in english, they are called with different names here in Italy. for example the red deer is called Cervo Rosso (or simply Cervo which means deer), but then the fallow deer is called Daino, and the roe deer Capriolo. and then we have different animals which are called with the same names, like both Crucian and Prussian carp are commonly called Carassio here (the prussian has actually a different name but no one uses it), causing a lot of confusion to poor fishers like me who love to know what we catch. |

Italian names are very similar to french ones. Fallow deer = Daim Roe Deer = Chevreuil (both share the caprine beginning, as chèvre means goat in French and Capri in Italian) |

A Roe deer is a Ree in Dutch. Red deer is an Edelhert (Noble deer if you translate literrally). Fallow deer is a Damhert (so it's quite similar to French, since Hert means deer) |

Capra ![]() Stephen: noble deer is also another name for the red deer here, but since it's the only cervidae with deer in the name, most people just say deer when referring to it. however, most exotic deer species still have deer in their name plus a translation of their original name; so we have cervo coda bianca (whitetail), cervo mulo (mule), cervo pomellato (spotted deer or axis). the wapiti is still called wapiti but in many documentaries they are called "Alce", which is a mistake since Alce is the moose. |
