Yeah! Water Buffalo first word is a very normal informal words to say, we can even say with stranger we don't know.

However, the moniter one is very rude and can only be used with very close friends.( Of course, it's up to your friend as well that will he/she allow you to use it with him/her.)

Here in Brazil the most common animal insults are:

These two are milder, and mean the person is dumb:
Anta: Tapir (never got this one, if you want to say someone is dumb, why on EARTH call them a Tapir???)
Burro: Donkey

Veado/Cervo (the last one isn't insulting): Deer
Cadela: Female Dog
Vaca: Cow
Galinha: Chicken
The last three are mostly used on women. Mostly.

Over here, 'Kieken' is a commonly used insult. It's not that rude, people just say it when you do something dumb xD . It means chicken.

When you called someone "Gallina" here (which means chicken) you are saying that that person is coward. If you call someone "Burro" (donkey) you are telling him that is an ignorant or stupid. If you called someone "Morsa" (walrus) "Vaca" (cow) or "Ballena" (whale) you are mocking about that person being fat. Same thing could be using the word "Hipopótamo" "Manatí"... any large animal for that matter, but the first three are the more common ones. Also if someone eats a lot or behave in a disgusting way you can call him "Cerdo" (pig) XD

The word "Gato" (cat) could be use for calling that to girls that behaive like prostitutes or have a fame of being easy with men, specially if those men have money or are famous. If the word is used on men then it means that he thinks he is a womanizer but in fact he isn't "Te hacés el gato"

Here we use galinha (chicken) , vaca (cow) and cadela (female dog) for that.
