Actually Edmontosaurus is the older name, not Anatotitan. So it should be called Edmontosaurus.

Actually Anatosaurus, Anatotitan, Claosaurus, and Trachodon are all now called Edmontosaurus.

Yes, but although anatotitan is no longer a genus is it not still a species of edmontosaurus? So I think the species should still retain anatotitan as a common name for the species.

No, because Anatotitan annectens is a binomial name, not a common name. The species is now called Edmontosaurus annectens and I would advise DM to call it as such

Well, the Platypus's common name was originally its genus before it was changed to Ornithorhynchus. So these things do happen.

That's because it lacked a common name, anything without a common name is automatically called by it's binomial name.

To call something 'Anatotitan' when the genus is actually Edmontosaurus would just confuse things in my opinion

EDIT: I think I'm confused on what you are saying. Are you saying 'Platypus' was the animal's original binomial name or that it's common name was once 'Ornithorhynchus'?

Yes, so why not use anatotitan as the common name for Edmontosaurus annectens?

Because that is no longer a valid genus. It's actual name is Edmontosaurus annectens.

What you're asking for is like asking Apatosaurus to be called Brontosaurus, or T. rex to be called Manospondylus. It just confuses a matter and there is no point to it

I'm not saying that Anatotitan's original name was Platypus, but that this was the original generic name of the present-day monotreme commonly known as the Platypus, but its binomial name was later changed to Ornithorhynchus anatinus. I was just using it as an example of a generic name that later became a common name.

I never said that. At all. Would you really think I'm that stupid? ._. by 'the animal' I was referring to the Platypus ;)

If you really need me to fill in all the details, here you go:

"I think I'm confused on what you are saying. Are you saying 'Platypus' was the Platypus' original binomial name or that the Platypus' common name was once 'Ornithorhynchus'?"

but as you decided to answer then I guess it's not needed.

But now I think we should leave all this 'renaming' discussion alone. DM will decide what to do, and we're just getting more and more offtopic
