Celebes crested macaque ~ Macaca nigra![]() General Information Class: Mammalia Order: Primates Family: Cercopithecidae Genus: Macaca Species: M. nigra Location The Celebes crested macaque is living in Tropical rainforests in the northeast of Sulawesi (Celebes) Island, in the center of Indonesia Conservation status ![]() Sizes
In Zoos Type of Exhibit: Despite living in rainforests, the Celebes crested macaque is a terrestrial animal. so the exhibit should be a grassy medium sized exhibit with low tropical plants and several tree trunks connected with ropes and hammocks. water and food containers are, of course, necessary, and an indoor exhibit/shelters for wintery days. It is necessary to surround the exhibit with electric fence since the macaques are ecxellent climbers and it is easy for them to escape if the exhibit isn't built well. Temperament: The macaques can be dangerous since they can bite you hard and leave deep scratches on you. Large adult males, for example, show their teeth as a sign of dominance and threatening. they are usually quiet, but can be agressive monkeys. Diet: The Celebes crested macaque is frugivorous, which means that most of it's diet are fruits. However, it's diet also consists seeds, leaves and insects. In zoos, it is recommended that the macaque's diet will include fruits and vegetables, and also different types of grains and seeds. As a treatment/enrichment, it could be given peanuts, grapes, and so on. Social Needs: The Celebes crested macaque usually lives in large groups, which can consist up to 25 individuals, 4 of them could be males. in smaller groups, there's usually one dominant male, along with several females. Sometimes, males will show agression towards each other, and if such happends in a zoo, the two must be seperated until one of them is moved to another zoo. Females will usually breed one or two offsprings. Extra Information:
