In Zoos

Type of Exhibit: a medium sized exhibit. with a lot of high tree trunks connected by ropes, bridges, hammocks and logs, since the Lion-tailed macaque is an arboreal animal, which means its spending most of the day on trees. The exhibit should also have low rocks, grassy ground and a few fern bushes scattered in the exhibit. The fence should be rocky with glass windows and several electric wires on top.

Temperament: The differences between the Lion-tailed macaque and other macaque species, is that the Lion-tailed macaque
usually avoids encounters with humans. It is a very territoreal monkey, and can be agressive.

Diet: Since the Lion-tailed macaque, as mentioned, is an arboreal monkey, it's main diet relies on fruits and leaves.
When on ground, it also feeds on seeds, flowers and insects. In zoos, different types of vegetables and fruits are excellent choise of diet. Treatments, may include peanuts, grapes, and even grains such as rice or humus.

Social Needs: The Lion-tailed macaque lives in large groups, that can consist about 20 individuals, with usually one dominant male. These macaques are unique, as they use 17 different types of voices in order to communicate with each other, along with a very skillful body language, also meant for communication.

  • The Lion-tailed macaque is the most rare of all macaques.

  • Unlike other macaques, the Lion-tailed macaques are excellent swimmers.

  • Only 1% of the Lion-tailed macaque's natural habitat still remains
