In Zoos

Type of Exhibit: A very large grassy exhibit, with a lot of low tropical foliage, such as ferns, but also a few trees, such as palm and Tamarind trees (the tree selection, is affected by the climate and area). Some rock patches may be placed in the exhibit, and the fence should be rocky (with several electric wires on top), with glass windows. Although gorillas don't usually swim, a pool or a tight stream is also good for the exhibit. It is also recommended to place a few platfroms and hammocks which will be scattered in the exhibit.

Temperament: Gorillas are usually quiet apes and will usually (mostly in wild) avoid encounters with humans. However, when
a male feels that he and/or his family are threatened, he will display agression and defensive behavior and attack. A male western lowland gorilla is 3 times stronger then human and can come at you with great force, but as mentioned, these apes are usually quiet.

Diet: The Western lowland gorilla's diet consists fruits, leaves, roots and insects. fruits and vegetables, are a good diet for gorillas in zoos.

Social Needs: in a group of gorillas, there's usually 1 male and 4 females, but a group can also consist up to 20 individuals.
when gorwn up, males will fight each other, and therefore in zoos, if such happends, the males must be seperated. the Western lowland gorilla also builds leave nests at night, where it sleeps.

Extra Information:

  • Male Western lowland gorilla is strong as 3 average persons.

  • Your cellphone is one of the causes to the decline in the western lowland gorilla's population.

  • The genome of a western lowland gorilla was sequenced in 2012.
