Type of Exhibit: A fairly large large grassy exhibit, capable of holding several of the species as they often live in large groups. Primarily filled with several trees and platforms to enrich the animal as they spend the majority of their lives within trees. An enclosure with a lot of low tropical foliage, such as ferns, are best suited to replicate their natural environment. Indoor areas must also provide plenty platforms and ropes to swing from in order the keep the bonobos fit and active while in captivity, with glass windows. A moat or decent size area of water may be best to keep the guests at a safe distance but also allowing a clear view of the animal, primarily an island exhibit may be best.

Temperament: Bonobos are highly sociable and intelligent apes and have been observed using tools in the wild. They are also an incredibly playful animals which often involves rough & tumble between juveniles.

Diet: Bonobos are omnivorous meaning they will eat plants and animals. Fruit constitutes to over 50% of their diet when plentiful in the wild.

Social Needs: Bonobos live in established hierarchical societies, led by one male and one female usually. However, when a male feels that he and/or his family are threatened, he will display aggression and defensive behaviour and attack against any other males so it is vital that there are never two young males kept together. Female bonobos have been observed to gang up on males bonobos in order to dominate.

Extra Information:
  • Bonobos have an average lifespan of 50 years.
  • They should be kept away from Chimpanzees to prevent diseases and hybridisation
