One of my cats are missing. My family just moved into a brand new house and this is our two cats' third day here, and they settled in relatively fast. One of them - Squeak - was around this morning, but he suddenly disappeared and we can't find him anywhere. The house was still empty of furniture when we searched for him, and we searched the house literally top to bottom, in every nook, cranny, cupboard and closet, but no luck. There isn't that many places for him to hide considering the whole place was empty when he disappeared, but we did find two open windows on the top floor. We think he might've fallen out if he went to jump onto the windowsill, but there's no injured cat on the ground below and we searched the bushes both side of the house as well as the backyard, with no sign of him. The movers are here now and are loading all of our things into the house, but once they've left and it's dark out, i'm going to do another thorough search around the house in a larger radius, put some food and old clothing on the front porch so the familiar smell will hopefully attract him, and ask the neighbors if they've seen him/could keep an eye out for him. If push comes to shove we'll have to put out flyers for him and call the humane society (might call tonight without delay), but i'm hoping he's just found a secret hiding place in the house that we haven't found yet. I'm worried that isn't the case, though, because he's been gone for many hours and hasn't appeared no matter how much we've called and searched, and there was no immediate reason for him to be scared and feel the need to hide, as both cats appeared to have settled in for the most part and there weren't any strangers in the house or loud noises going on. If anyone has any other ideas about how I could go about trying to find my cat, I would really, really appreciate it. I'll continue looking up information on the internet too, but whatever help I can get would be great if you know something. Oh and both of our cats are strictly indoor pets, by the way. They're terrified of the outdoors and would never venture out purposefully if a door was accidentally left open. |

Well, if they're indoor cats and you don't think they'd have gotten out, I would be too worried. Cats are very quick, can hide in practically anything, just as soon as you guys are looking, he could be darting to some place else, or as mentioned he may have found him a spot to hide. While you say he seemed settled maybe you just caught him at a calm moment and he's a bit shocked by the new surroundings or exploring. Most people I've seen with cats, have them come home. However, my aunt lost her cat recently, and only just rediscovered him; for months she thought he was lost somewhere in the wild and it turns out her neighbor had found him and been taking care of him. She had even gotten him tags and gotten him neutered by the time my aunt saw him in the window one day and went to talk to her

Both of our cats came out of their hiding spot in the kitchen shelves yesterday and started wandering around and exploring, and eventually their stances became much more relaxed and they seemed quite comfortable. They started eating, laying down, grooming, stretching etc. while still exploring, and they were like that all night and all morning, and Yoda - our other cat - is still relaxed, so it wasn't just a "calm moment" that we caught them in. I will definitely be asking the neighbors about it, though, and i'm about to make flyers to put up tomorrow if we don't find him tonight. Luckily, both our cats are microchipped so that increases the odds of getting Squeak back if he was brought to the humane society. I just read than an indoor cat isn't likely to go far if they find themselves stuck outside, though, which is good news. He'll be scared and immediately find the nearest hiding spot, because he's in unfamiliar territory, and will not meow if he's called since it would alert predators as to his location. I'm going to take a flashlight and do an extremely thorough search all along the street tonight as well as the immediate area around our house, and hopefully he'll turn up. He'll be more likely to venture out of his hiding spot at night if he's out there. |

Someone called about our lost cat poster. We went out and saw Squeak, but he ran before we had a chance to grab him. The poor guy is terrified. He let me get really close before darting though, so i'm quite certain he recognized me, but was too scared to stay put. We're going back to the same area tomorrow to look again in the daylight. He looks perfectly fit, thank god. One of the main things we were worried about if he fell out the window was if he was injured by the fall, got hit by a car etc., but he ran away absolutely fine, and it rained today which means he has something to drink. Tomorrow we're going to bring his favorite treat (wet food) so the smell will hopefully reach him and trigger more recognition, especially if he's hungry, and i'll have to try approaching him much more slowly this time, letting him come to me rather than the other way around. We might not have him yet, but it's such a relief to know he's out there and healthy, and we know the general area we need to search. I'll be putting more flyers around in mailboxes tomorrow as well as posting them around town, and if we're lucky, we'll get more calls. |

That is so good you found him but it must be so irritating not to have been able to bring him home. ![]() Well now you know where to look. I really hope you get him soon, he must be absolutely terrified. |

Hopefully because he saw us and we left our scent he'll stick around in the same area, or if not, maybe try to follow our scent trail back. To be honest i'm not too overly frustrated that we couldn't bring him home tonight because i'm still relieved just to know that he's alive and healthy. We're finally not left in the dark anymore and have a strong lead about exactly where we need to look tomorrow, so that's a big leap from what we knew even this morning. We weren't even certain that he left the house until we saw him. He has a better chance of surviving outside than if he was trapped indoors, though, because if he remained silent and was trapped in a wall or something then he wouldn't have any food or water. At least outside he can scavenge and drink from pools/puddles. At any rate, i'll sleep a little easier tonight knowing that he's out there and well, and hopefully we can catch him tomorrow. |

I just realized I should probably post a couple of pictures so you all can see what he looks like. These are the ones on the lost cat flyers. One that shows his face clearly, and the other his whole body. Squeak I suppose I might as well show pictures of his brother too. His name is Yoda, perfectly safe in the house still, but probably wondering where on earth his brother is. The two of them have been together since birth. ![]() Yoda

We got him!! We were chasing someone elses poor cat outside. Squeak was trapped in the large cistern in our basement. My mom looked in it before but without a flashlight, so she didn't see him. When she was down there doing laundry tonight she heard him squeak (he was named due to the fact that his meow is very weak) and grabbed a flashlight. The stupid cat was huddled underneath a rickety ladder that he could've used to climb out, but I suppose he was so terrified of being down there alone in such a strange place that he just shut up and stayed where he was. Neither of the cats are supposed to have access to the basement but I guess he managed to sneak through the door when it was accidentally left open or something. He was down there for about two and a half days without food and water, and he's filthy from the dust and dirt, but we've got him. Tomorrow we'll give him a bath so that we don't traumatize him even more before he's had a chance to recover. He hasn't had anything to eat or drink yet despite putting him with the food and water, but he'll get around to it in his own time. He seems to be more interested in exploring the house at the moment since all of our furniture was brought in while he was still trapped in the basement. Thank goodness I can sleep easy tonight. And now maybe I can actually get a bit of studying done for my upcoming exam.
