Your opinion on hunting

I am actually against whaling (except by traditional groups, such as in the Faroe Islands) as it is inhumane & endangers whales. I believe that the military should be used to protect fish & whale stocks from overfishing & should attack any unauthorized vessel doing these activities.

Thank you for the set, Azrael!

Hunting is fine. Animals are food. People need to eat food. Not everyone wants to be, or is even able, to be a vegetarian and hunting is generally a lot more humane than supporting the factory farming industry.

As long as animals are brought down quickly and humanely I have no issue with it. Whaling is inhumane, I don't support that, same with leghold traps, those traps that drown fur animals, etc, and I generally dislike sport hunting, although if at least you or somebody is going to eat the rest of the animal I guess it's fine... but personally I don't like mounted animals and if ever I went hunting I wouldn't mount anything. I'd eat it, keep some feathers or antlers, but I just don't like to see it staring back at me forever on a wall. It just bothers me on a personal level. Those rich folks who pay thousands of dollars to go kill an elephant or something, that kind of disgusts me because even though the meat usually goes to feed local people, that is generally not the reason they're killing the elephant. They're doing it for the act of killing an elephant, as if it makes them somehow manly or powerful, which just appalls me.

Obviously such things as fur-hunting (it's never done humanely and honestly in this day and age we do not need to be wearing fur in most parts of the world - except in some native cultures), killing rhinos for their horns, and making tigers into rugs and nonsense folk medicine are not things I support either.

Fishing could also be considered a form of hunting and one which I'm less opinionated on. Since fish apparently are not hugely sensitive to pain, I don't necessarily think fishing is cruel, although when I do it my only intention is to bring home dinner and not just catch and release. As long as stress on the animal is kept to a minimum and it's relatively quickly released, or humanely dispatched, fishing is fine with me and an activity I enjoy.

Banned for being rude.

We should take a look at Botswana, they banned sport/trophy hunting and will only allow hunting by indigenous people.

I have nothing against hunting, as long as it is done humanely and the animal is not an endangered species. I would never hunt an animal myself, unless playing Carnivores on my iPad counts.

1. The Indonesian Lamalera hunting Sperm whales because they NEED it
Do they ? Or do we just want to keep everything the same, aka just the way we humans like it ? :P I always find it funny how people want to cling on and protect every single animal, assuming that nature can't handle us and our impact on the world. ( Remember how 90% of the world's animal life died out ? Nature recovered just fine without our help ) In the end, life and nature will find it's way, no ecosystem lasts forever, we will never be able to control our world. The idea that we'll be able to shape the entire world to our own liking and that nothing will ever change is an illusion, one from which we'll have to wake up some day.

That's something that really depends on which country you're in. For instance, in some countries you have these mass chicken farms and stuff like that, which is something I really don't support. On the other hand, other countries including Belgium, have more humane production systems like large outdoor areas for chickens ( which all chicken farms in Belgium should already have by now, or at least by 2015 ). So it all depends on where you're from really. Things are improving, but as usual, they only improve slowly :P

Supporting the United States factory farming industry, then.

I do too, of course. I think most of us here do. I certainly don't like harming any creature but there are nevertheless justified reasons to kill animals (humanely), in my opinion, one of the foremost being for food.

SlenderRex, then surely you'd be against a Lion killing a Zebra? A Great White killing a seal? Death is natural. Honestly as long as the amount of animals killed is not excessive and the species is not under any threat I don't see much trouble with it. (As long as it is a humane death, and not tortured or a long, painful death for the animal)

Is that directed at me?

..of course I'm not opposed to predation. Humanely only refers to when humans are the predators. Humans have morality - we're obligated, in my opinion, to do things more humanely than animals which do not have morality.

Look I know humans are predators and that we're being part of the food chain, it's just that I think we take too much sometimes.

There is always something going on...

I'm OK with hunting, long as it's for a good use. When I hunt, I use everything, bone, teeth, skin, organs, everything, especially when I fish(which is a form of hunting). I kill the animal humanly, and I let nothing go to waste. I use teeth and bones to make some tools(which is surprisingly very effective), I use the skin to carry the meat; which I eat, and the organs are used for several things such as food and bait(depending on what animal I hunted). So basically, if hunting is like that, it's OK with me.
