Considering they use golden eagles for wolf hunting in Mongolia it's not much of a surprise they hunt deer.

Raptors always win, no joke when a flying eagle kills a deer, alone that is considered a win for all the predatory Maniraptorformes! |

There'll be no foot-walking! Just air-flying!

Yes, they are known to do it, in rare cases though, and it hadn't been caught on photo before, that's what makes this so unique

It only approves what I've been saying so far. Golden Eagles are awesome! @Furka: Looks like it's a Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) to me. Size seems pretty correct, and so is body shape. |

This is awesome! If an eagle can do this, then I don't see why some paleontologists are starting to doubt that a Deinonychus could take on a Tenontosaurus. |

probably because the eagle has the air attack advantage ? not to mention these are still rare cases. |

ok Golden Eagles has become one of my favorite birds from now on XD That was epic. I feel kind of bad for the baby deer, but those pictures were epic and that eagle is so majestic. |

Deer/eagle weight ratio is ~40/5 as far as I remember, while tenontosaurus/deinonychus was ~1500/70. Deer don't have massive tails and remember that in general, mammals are far more eager to run instead of fight, which is not the case in archosaurs - and even then you don't see eagles hunting deer on daily basis. While the deer might try to run from the eagle, Tenontosaurus was more likely to fight back and when you have over-a-ton of angry dinosaur flailing around, you're up for a heavy beating. Unless you have an animal hunting in extremely large, well organized packs that are willing to risk losing a member every now and then while hunting prey - it'd be more logical to assume that only juveniles and sick/dying animals were attacked. Raptors weren't powerhouses depicted in JP, or even DR. An animal that decides to take a huge risk of dying while hunting is bound to go extinct fast. |
