What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

while I may not agree with many of his theories, I am still a huge fan of his work from an artistic perspective

Must be Trans7's On The Spot... They have done some wrong facts about wildlife too...

Anyways, one of my pet peeves (which might be normal and had been talked about by someone else), is how people always talk about dinosaurs being such childish things... Indonesia has a lot of people who think this way...

What does it even mean for dinosaurs to be childish? It's not like they're some kiddie TV show or something. They're just animals, and animals have no target demographic. :P

I dunno... Really its more about having more dinosaur (and prehistoric creatures) related books targeted for kids than for adults... Thomas Holtz's and Luis Rey's dinosaur encyclopedia and Mark Witton's pterosaur encyclopedia (presumably for adults) never made it here...

there are far to few modern books anyway, geared towards children or not, most books are still teaching outdated science (since otherwise more kids wouldn't buy it)

That is something that really annoys me. Whenever i go to a library and ask for dinosaurs books they are all in the kids section and is hard to find good ones that are not meant for kids. And when i finally find one that could be interesting enough and went to the cashier to buy they always assume is for some kid and ask me if i want it prepared as present ¬¬

thats why I stick to e-books

just a few weeks ago I went through with my school librarian and picked out all the various zoology (paleontology, ichthyology, and some ornithology) that were outdated/damaged and took them off the shelves, if they were damaged we just trashed em'
the others IDK what she did with them

The fact that some sauropod reconstructions STILL show them with nostrils on their foreheads. >_<

I thought a few species did have such high placed nostrils? (not many)

No, those holes were most likely just fenestrae like those in the frills of ceratopsians and the sides of theropod snouts.

Also the widespread misconception that dinosaurs were an evolutionary failure, which obviously couldn't be more backwards. So what if most of them went extinct? That eventually happens to everything.

Everyone thinks Pterosaurs are flying dinosaurs, Pterosaurs are related to dinosaurs but are not dinosaurs, and people call Pterosaurs an incorrect name which is Pterodactyl. There is a Pterodactylus, which is a genus of Pterosaurs, and a Pterodactyloidea, a suborder which includes the later and more advanced Pterosaurs, but no Pterodactyl.

^ there's still a pterodactyloid tho... The best way to call a Pteranodon-ish creature...

@Bigwhale: i think the guys there just pick a random dinosaur pic off of Google... And that's very lucky of you, being able to buy that book xD

The snake-haters on the TSL forums who are whining about Titanoboa being added to the game. >_< It will probably stick close to the rivers and lakes anyway, so if they don't like it all they have to do is avoid the water.
