What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

exactly, and yet try to bring up the very idea that its plausible for any diving (not like gannets, diving under water not into the water) pterosaurs and people tend to go ape

Zhenyuanopterids have even been speculated on several occasions to be aquatic IIRC.
*Boreopterids
Boreopterus was discovered before Zhenyuanopterus.

Fossils valuable to science being sold to private collectors. This shit annoys the hell out of me. Just think how much knowledge did we lose because of the people who buy fossils like it was just any piece of fancy looking rock.

Dinosaurs being treated like fantasy beasts rather than real animals. Granted, they're animals unlike any alive today, but they're still animals! I've never seen any movie that's deliberately exaggerated the appearance or behaviour of a dog or an elephant, so why does this constantly happen with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures? It just frustrates me to no end!

plenty of modern animals get similar treatment in films

Jaws 1-3
Jaws 4 nope nope nope nope nope does not exist
Anaconda
Piranha
Snakehead
Sharknado
Arachnophobia
Snakes on a Plane

come on, how was I supposed to resist the Jaws 4 joke

its an issue that plagues more than just dinosaurs, they are not alone bearing the burden of this stigma

And if they exaggerate the appearance and behavior of modern animals it's because they want to scare people for money.

I wouldn't say no reason, a good scare can be fun

the problem comes when ignorant people get scared and start going out slaughtering sharks because of Jaws, or think its not safe to go into the Everglades because of snakeheads (it isn't safe, but nothing to do with the dinky little snakeheads)

True, I forgot about those, but the difference is that even prehistoric creatures that were most likely small, harmless and/or cute in real life are treated as vicious monsters in cinema. Even f**king trilobites have been depicted as swarming flesh-eaters on several occasions.

Another thing that annoys me is going to a museum and hearing someone say "oh look honey, a dinosaur" while pointing to the skeleton of a rauisuchian or a giant ground sloth.
