To most people prehistory was a time when everything was incredibly alien, unfamiliar, and potentially hostile to human life. Obviously something as mundane as an average-sized invertebrate would be unthinkable for a period as eldritch and bizarre as the Mesozoic.

To be fair, the Mesozoic was pretty bizarre.

Well yes, but not the monster-filled fantasy realm many people think it was.

Sorry but no, that's not Meg but Cretoxyrhina mantelli, a large shark that fed on small mosasaurs. |

Oh sorry, I thought it was a tylosaurus and the shark was a megalodon, even though they didn't coexist. |

Actually, Cretoxyrhina sharks were eating mosasaurs and other big, marine reptiles. Spoiler: click to toggle @Even: There are. And in fact it's good that many of the best Konservat-Lagerstatten are from Early Palaeozoic, as they're some of the best ways to see how evolution was going, and almost all, if not all animal types of today were divided in these early times.. In that case, it makes some semblance of self, though this whole megalodon is a great segway: I hate fanboys who keep overestimating their favourite animals. They constantly ignore all fossil evidence, all reasoning, and all judgement, simply to essentially say "mine is bigger", as if having your favourite extinct animal be "better" than everybody elses favourite extinct animal somehow makes you better than them. This is, of course, the most present with tyrannosaurus rex, though in an odd twist of events, the incredibly popular "version" of T.rex has become so detached from the actual animal, that many people do not like the actual creature, to the point of downright hating it, because they feel it tarnishes the awesomebro reputation of their favorite dragon. Another great example of this is the case of poor spinosaurus, who had the misfortune of being portrayed as killing a tyrannosaurus. On one hand, this catapulted it into its, in my opinion, rightful fame, making most people realize that there IS such a thing as a predator larger than T.rex. On the other hand, it made it the biggest hate target in the world, leading to the amusing situation of people going on personal vendettas trying to insult and mock an animal that has been dead for over a hundred million years. So yeah, fanboys, screw 'em. |

No, just a general statement. I actually agreed with your post on the dangers of bringing back creatures like Smilodon just because they're "kewl". I never said they wouldn't be dangerous at all, they just wouldn't be marauding kaiju that were a threat to humanity as a whole. Edited by CyborgIguana, Jul 24 2014, 11:23 AM.

no animal is harmless but I don't believe invasive de-extinct animals to be any more harmful or dangerous than invasive extant animals |

So-called "paleo-fans" who refuse to take interest in any prehistoric animal that isn't a dinosaur.
