But then again people are ignorant. At least most people don't think dinosaurs are just one species. Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs isn't known to many paleo-fans but that there are more then 6 dinosaur genera is known by most non-paleo fans, at least the ones I've met. Non-paleo fans aren't dumb they just aren't interested in paleontology enough to know most things about paleontology. |

I do at least know people who recognize more than 6 dinosaurs, but just can't name them. Most people I know recognize Parasaurolophus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, and Struthiomimus among others but just don't know their names.

A) Our current classification system is very much artificial and non-existent. There are no clear lines between 'reptiles' and 'birds', that's just something humans made up to classify something. B) People that choose not to follow this 'mainstream' classification are not necessarily idiots nor inexperienced. My point: There is no clear, realistic distinction between Pterosaurs, Dinosaurs, Ichtyosaurs, Reptiles in general, Birds, hell even Mammals have irregularities. None of what is mentioned above are 'facts', they're things most people have chosen to 'accept' in order to understand this world, but at the end of the day there is NO OBVIOUS LINE. What annoys me? People constantly bringing up the fact that Pterosaurs are not Dinosaurs and if anyone says otherwise they are immediately stupid or inexperienced. I am both of these things, and I agree on the point that Pterosaurs aren't dinosaurs, but what does it matter. |

So you're saying we should just get away with calling animals anything we want just because the lines are blurred in some places? |

I'd be willing to bet I know as much about medicine as most other people who have not pursued a career in it, same goes for engineering (let alone most people my age) I get people not wanting to "know everything about paleontology", but thats not what we are complaining about, lack of interest is one thing, lack of basic knowledge and claiming you are correct is quite another whether you have an interest in it or not if you know that "dinosaur" is a thing you should also know its not a species if you know pterosaurs are a thing you should know they are not dinosaurs (same for plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, etc) |

Hmm, I worded that terribly, but generally that is indeed what I'm saying. In short: People that say Pterosaurs are Dinosaurs are wrong, but people that say Pterosaurs are not Dinosaurs aren't necessarily right. |

I guess I can kind of see what you're saying. Anyway, the old Linnaen method of classification is indeed bullshit, which is why we seldom use it anymore. These days we use phylogenetic bracketing to classify animals, which is generally more reliable. |

-lack of interest -lack of knowledge -and lack of knowledge while claiming to have it are all very different things |

I know but lack of interest often causes lack of knowledge. |

Because somebody will always force it down your ear but dinosaurs aren't that popular. Honestly due to all these arguments in this forum I wouldn't be suprise if the staff close this forum down. |

It's a 'What annoys you about' topic. I don't think there is any hostility involved at all, we're all just discussing and sharing opinions. Of course debate exists, I really don't see why the staff would close it though. |

I like dinosaurs but I don't like this demeanor that everybody who doesn't know about dinosaurs is dumb. |
