What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

Lizard fanboys and feather nazis, two extremist groups in the paleo-community that are equally irritating. :P

My definition of a feather nazi is someone who insists ALL dinosaurs must've been feathered the way lizard fanboys insist they all must've been scaly. None of you are one of those people AFAIK.

In fact, by the common definition I myself am a feather nazi. :P

I'm not slow! That's just my moe!

I consider "feather nazi" equivalent to "grammar nazi"
in which case I do not find it a bad thing

Oh... I never know before that we have evidence about Triceratops having such spikes...

Are there any paper or article about this?
Theres "nipple" like scales among the osteoderms , whcih likely were part of a larger spike.

There isn't any paper as of yet, but there are pictures, IIRC DG has showed me some.

That is awesome! I didn't knew that. I won't remade my trike though. I'm too lazy, but i didn't knew there was actual evidence of them having spikes.

its still fairly speculative either way quills or spikes
what we know for certain is thay they had raised sections almost like small osteoderms on some of the scales, its unknown if they supported larger structures

My idea was that between decay and weathering and fossilisation, they've lost their true shape. The idea is that in life, they'd be structurally similar to Thorny Devil type spikes. Not really long quills or anything.

But that's just my take.

besides, we don't have their tails or anything so we can't say they had no quills aswell, maybe (or maybe even probably) they had both quills and spikes, who knows.

The Triceratops from the upcoming game Saurian also has a similar "spiky" design IIRC.

Saurian based their design on the latest finds, so it is so far the most accurate representation of a triceratops yet.

Rat snake is love... Rat snake is life

I think the spikes are probably the highly modified quils. like rhino horn that is made from a bunch of hairs sticking together. This might a group of 'original' ceratopsian quils that forms up into spike...

I think I am going off topic. :P

Before I post the next thing that annoys me and re-rail the topic, this is unlikely since the spines themselves WERE scales. Even those of Psittacosaurus. They were under a microscope more akin to iguana spines than feather quills.

Anyway.

Another thing that annoys me about paleontology is how most people in society frown upon it, and dismiss it as a childish study that serves no purpose. I was HATED at school because I was interested in paleontology, and I genuinely couldn't understand what was so bad about reading about dinosaurs. Am I the only one that's had that growing up?

If you don't conform to majority's likes and 'interests', prepare to be ridiculed. Kids are cruel. In my case it was being an aquarist that gave me a status of persona non grata for a good few months.

I ended up converting 3 of them into fish lovers later on tho, so can say mine were pretty weak in their position.
