I used to have a friend who had no interest in dinosaurs but loved birds, I explained to him of the true identity of dinosaurs and just how "bird-like" they really were and now he at least sort of knows they exist

People who think we know what dinosaurs looked like. WE DON'T!!! We may in most cases have a VERY BASIC idea of what their general shape and form was, but other than that there are so many details regarding soft tissues, musculature, and integument that have been lost to fossilization and may never be recovered! It's also certainly no coincidence that most of these aforementioned people still draw shrink-wrapped dinosaurs. |

it annoys me when people make a big deal over things like "did you know not all the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are from the Jurassic?" A) its called branding, its not inaccurate because its not meant to be accurate, its just a name, they even make nods to that fact in canon so bringing it up is stupid B) bringing it up like its some huge news is incredibly annoying, it practically goes without saying they aren't all from the jurassic Edited by stargatedalek, Nov 5 2014, 08:06 PM.

What annoys me most direly is the fact that many people take stances against certain reconstructions purely because they don't appeal to them. Most recent example? the quadrupedal spinosaurus and how people are siding against it only because "it doesn't look like spino", despite being the more likely option so far (Mark witton and marco auditore checked the actual fossils, the actual paper measurements are right). Most famous example? People in 2014 swearing that "raptors" were scaly, do i really....really need to explain that one? To exemplify what i mean try to find a reconstruction of your favorite dinosaur, you'll see that every reconstruction is made to look "cool" or "menacing" or "badass". Now look at modern animals, sure, theres a lot of badass creatures out there, but theres also silly looking, cute, beautifull, hideous, gross and adorable ones aswell, nature doesn't care about what people find cool, it cares about whatever works. in short, this: http://dinogoss.blogspot.com.br/2014/07/people-think-feathered-dinosaurs-dont.html Edited by Yi Qi, Nov 6 2014, 03:33 PM.

Dinosaurs will always be badass in my eyes, regardless of what they end up looking like in the end.

what i mean is, every dinosaur out there is decipted in a way to make it look either "menacing" or "cool", when in fact, not all would look like that not being badass doesn't mean not being interesting, cranes don't look badass in the slightest, yet they are very interesting creatures. |

Maybe I just have a different definition of "badass" than the average person, but I agree and I'm also sick of the mindset that dinosaur reconstructions MUST look scary all the time! |

http://log.johnconway.co/post/46259087381/jurassic-park-4-awesomebro I'd say the awesomebro culture is responsible for it, and for JP's "monsterification" of dinosaurs. |

The problem is not JP per se, since it was as accurate as the knowledge of that time allowed it to be. The problem is that the people that like Jurassic Park can't get over the movie despiction of the dinosaurs and don't really care about dinosaurs at all. They just want to see bloodthisty monsters fighting to death or tearing humans apart ![]() Also, the fact that they take Jurassic Park as certified source of information of dinosaur's behaviour and apearence is the other problem ![]() If i can have a dollar for every time a friend of mine says "But in Jurassic Park bla bla" after i told them some dinosaur fact that the movie got wrong... that anoys me

I agree with Cyborg (sort-of), but maybe its just that I think cranes are bad-ass I've always been interested in birds, and the more "bird-like" we see dinosaurs the more I tend to like them |

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day I felt guilty for liking Jurassic Park. Also, let's face it, "monsterizing" dinosaurs was already a thing well before JP came out. Edited by CyborgIguana, Nov 6 2014, 11:28 PM.

As i said, "monsterizing" is an effect of the "awesomebro" culture, which is responsible by JP, but not made by JP. Its been around all the way since "The valley of Gwangi" heck, maybe even earlier. |

I think it's been around ever since the first complete dinosaur fossils were discovered. Heck, living back then how could you not look at skeletons like those and visualize them as giant, terrifying monsters? |
