Well you can't expect everyone to know it.
Otherwise some people might expect you to know nuclear physics well too.
my bruther study nuculear physic at his collage so he tort me every thing about it so yes i do know .
You can't just expect people to know everything especially thing they aren't interested to... We may know about dinosaurs but in the same time we might be so suck at food, cars, fasion, actors, chemistry, etc. which people that may not know about dinosaur know them in deep detail.

Judging by your English, you should honestly apply this to yourself.

Well if it is one, then its probably not a good idea to feed a Troll, at least one of this low of a threat level.

One thing that kinda annoys me is the assumption that the number of species and families of animals that currently exists is higher than it has ever been before as if we were at a point of "maximum biodiversity" (or at least before we started to cause a massive ecological impact).

Haven't those who make those claims consider two things:

1.- The fossil record is very fragmentary, we will never found remains of all species that had lived in the past and maybe not even all families (Phylogeny concept) of animals that ever lived.

2.- The fact that is a way deal harder to differentiate extinct species from one another compared to differentiating extant species (with exctant species we can now they're shape, colors and genetic information to classify them according while we seldomly do with extinct ones).

Not to mention, even with some modern animals it's hard to tell if they are different species, subspecies or populations sometimes.

True.
But it's harder still with extinct ones.
It would had sense that we had indeed a relative high biodiversity compared to most of the geological range (the more time life is on Earth the more derived it gets and the more taxons are formed). But claiming that we are on a climax of global biodiversity is in my oppinion kinda callous.

We don´t even know all modern animals.
If you don´t believe me, how many tapirs were known 2010 and how many ones are known today?
So, I think we can´t even except to know everything about extinct animals, since we don´t even know everything about recent ones.

Well here's some statistics which I will go double check later on to make sure I've got this right. But anyway:

  • Approximately 99% of all life that ever existed on Earth is extinct.
  • Only 1% of those organisms will have been preserved in the fossil record.
  • Only 1% of these fossilised remains will ever be found.
  • That means we will only ever know approximately 0.000099% of all extinct life that ever existed.
  • Meanwhile, if my facts are right, the current estimate of how much we know about our modern ecosystems is approximately 50%.

More food for thought.

I just don´t understand why we find fossils from some species more often than from others....
That´s kind of annoying...

Preservation artifact, I assume. Some places preserve fossils more easily than others.
