People who don't seem to realize that nature doesn't bend to their tastes. Constantly denying that theropods had feathers doesn't change the fact that they had feathers! |

Scientific racism in the paleoanthropology field absolutely drives me up the wall. |

Citation please. Where is this racism? Also paleoanthropology doesn't make people be racist. People make people be racist. Edited by Guat, Aug 30 2015, 03:37 PM.

Basically the entire field of physical anthropology Paleoanthropology and race Polygenism is a widely sourced excuse for scientific racism The person who dubbed Pithecanthropus Alalus had sketchy racial theories Once it was shown that anyone outside of S-SA had Neanderthal DNA, Neandethal DNA was widely touted as superior |

I got to read throught some blogs and articles in anthropological anatomy and I kinda agree, they seem to be a lot of effort in trying to segregate the human population by several internal anatomical details like the shape of the skull and sometimes it seems to go through rather edgy paths... Even in the 21st Century.

Because there was some racists in anthropology doesn't mean anthropology is a racist subjecg, this was from the late 1800's to the early 1900's anyways. As said by many people we can't dwell in the past. Also Polygenism is a very outdated theory that has very little favor of it today. And because one person that excelled in a subject was racist doesn't mean the subject approves of racism. Also the last link is from racist people themselves, not paleoanthropologists but white supremacists, so I can't take that as a valid reason that paleoanthropology is a racist subject, neither any of your other links. |

Um...when exactly did she say that paleoanthropology as a whole was a racist subject?

It certainly has more to do with individuals... That would be like judging the paleontological community as a whole based on the work of David Peters... *SHUDDERS. |

I agree. It's also like claiming every dog is evil because one attacked a child. |

She did NOT if you read her post she says 'Racism IN paleontology' to deny that it exist would be a lie, look even if you like something and you are willing to defend it until the end doen't mean you have to be blind to the things that are not perfect within.

@ everyone, it's totally fine, I understand the response. I was just doing some research at my local library this past week and found out about Ernst Haeckel's Pithecanthropus Alalus which was totally revolutionary for his time and then learned about his views on race makes one sad. Today's paleoanthropologists I have a lot of respect for and it's a field I really want to get into so no, I would never call the whole subject racist.

Because that sort of science totally doesn't save lives when a poorly preserved body dump is discovered and anthropologists need to identify a victim. Call it racist all you want to, but it is important to know subtle details like these that separate people by things like age, gender, and even race. Being able to identify such markers on ancient remains can help paleontologists learn important things about history. As a scientist it's important to be able to separate yourself and view your work objectively. Racism is discrimination, recognizing there are differences between races may look racist to those who don't view things as objectively as they can, but it IS NOT RACISM. |
