What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

We COULD cheat by giving it a new generic name that just alters the spelling very slightly. :P
Nannotyrannus.

Also, since we're talking about the thing, what even was the big deal about Nanotyrannus? I mean it's not big, mean and awesomebro, and in the "documentaries" it was basically portrayed as Tyrannosaurus's shadow.

I guess some people just liked the idea of a dwarf T. rex.

Something to compete with T.rex is all I can think of. Jurassic Fight Club popularized the idea of Nanotyrannus as a baby T.rex eater and eternal rival of T.rex mothers everywhere. I assume that is the source of its modern popularity among mainstream dinosaur enthusiasts.

I blame Jurassic Fight Club.

Back on topic, JFC in general annoys me. The general 'awesomebro' depiction of dinosaurs, the persistent inaccuracies (feathers please) and the fact that it claims to be a real documentary all frustrate me. Inaccuracy in films, okay, they're films, but in documentaries? Nope nope nope.

I can tolerate MINOR inaccuracies in documentaries (heck, even inaccuracies to the extent of the ones in Planet Dinosaur don't bother me TOO much), but something like JFC is just inexcusable.

When people compare dragons to dinosaurs.

It kills me. xD

What about comparing dinosaurs to dragons?

On the JFC topic; inaccuracies in something like Planet Dinosaur or WWD don't bother me as much because there was clearly effort to depict the information of the time decently. JFC seems like it didn't even care and wanted to attract the violence-obsessed 10-13 year old dinosaur fanatics that don't care about actual paleontology.

Of course the aforementioned two BBC documentaries had their share of sensationalized content as well (venomous dromaeosaurids and whale-sized Liopleurodon come to mind in particular), but it's still nothing compared to JFC.

At least those had some basis in opinions that some professionals had based on passable evidence. Nanotyrannus being a specialist predator of young T.rex is totally fabricated and based on nothing.

Rat snake is love... Rat snake is life

"But Nanuqsaurus's name is silly and not awesomebro enough! It doesn't even have 'tyrant' in its name, bla bla bla...."

And don't let me get to how silly dinosaur fights are in JFC.... Nothing looks natural at all and it makes dinosaur like something that spend their time seeking for oppotunity to fight all the time. Like.... You have a pair of doomed Stegosaurus, sticking in the mud trap and then it's a good idea for you to completely abandon them to fight a Camarasaurus instead after one of the Stego wacked your stupid comrade to death....

Guys, don't be mean about JFC.

It taught me that the true winner of all fights ever IS EXTINCTION. :jawdrop:

In short: life sucks and you can never win anything ever because evolution intends for you to lose it all eventually. Isn't paleontology wonderful?

This dude is literally implying that birds can't be dinosaurs because they lived at the same time as dinosaurs.
