What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

Might I suggest the Cretaceous cut?! No voice overs except narration similar to the original TV series done by Benedict Cumberbatch. It really does let you enjoy the work and beauty of the animation and can be rather enjoyable. Again not as good as the originals but not totally blasphemous.
Wait, what? Where can I find this!?

I believe on ITunes or on the 3D and BluRay bundle.

When people try to argue that Homo florensis represents a population of humans with several congenital or pathological deformities. I've seen people (including well-regarded anthropologists) try to argue that the H. florensis type specimen had Downs Syndrome, Rickets, Primordial Dwarfism, microcephaly, you name it. But whenever detailed analysis has been done it's indicated none of these appear to be true. The proportions are different than what you would expect to see in an individual with these conditions, same for brain volume. Additionally, the presence of archaic traits seem to indicate that it likely evolved from Homo erectus and represents a different line from Homo heidelbergensis, Homo neanderthalensis, the Denisova hominin (which I'm not sure even has a scientific name), and Homo sapiens.

Really the study of ancient hominids in general is a huge mess. There's always a huge backlash to any new discovery it seems. And the fact that I still see people sometimes depict hairy, ape-like Neanderthals just hurts my soul.

This has reminded me of a truly bizarre (for a lack of better word) hypothesis that I think you'll find to be a rather painful read. Hoo-boy, it's uh...it's really something.

Oh god, I've seen that site before. Must've lost a quarter of my brain cells just reading the intro page.

Another hypothesis on early human evolution I find bizarre is that one crackpot geneticist's theory that the Homo genus originated from a literal Suidae/chimp hybrid. Naturally, I remember his site being pretty evasive as to how this would even WORK.

Oh my god :implode:

Both of those are just...no! Why is the field I'm planning on going into populated with so many crackpots!?

Also, speaking of my poor beloved Neanderthals, one of my cousins shared an article about archaic human amixture with Homo sapiens. The article then went on to say that the DNA did not in fact come from Neanderthals (which it clearly did) and instead came from humans interbreeding with Nephilim, which were apparently fallen angels or something like that.

I read that too. Site also talked about "Pigeon x Rabbit" "Human x Cow" etc. hybrids. Which are impossible.
I imagine a lot of zoophiliac sickos probably get behind what is presented.

I've always imagined The Croods to take place in a version of prehistory where that site's view of evolution is correct. :P

I hate that people tease me for being a palaeontology enthusiast. They say ridiculous bollocks like "Are cats dinosaurs?" or "They're just big lizards/fish/whatever stupid thing they think of" and just generally mock me. And they call Confuciusornis "Conf**kysaurus"

Oh also the fact that you can't say "Homo erectus" or any of the "Fukui-" dinosaurs without them snickering grinds my gears

I understand. Far too well I understand. Many times in middle school I had to explain to people that there is no such thing as a "D***osaurus" or a "V*****saurus". On top of that, people would say dinosaurs weren't real just to annoy me. Thank goodness they didn't know about those dinosaurs you mentioned.

But fear not; if your experience is like mine, someday those people shall move on with life, and you shall evolve to the level of "explaining to people what paleontology is, and then doing it a second time because they now think you're an archaeologist"
