I think I can see where he's coming from. People get accustomed to and attached to a particular reconstruction and assume it as fact, and when new evidence comes along that shows us that the animal looked a good bit different, people kick up a fuss about it and refuse to let go of the old image. *coughcoughSpinosauruscoughcough* |

Well of course there's that, but I don't think including poorly-known species in popular media is a sin in and of itself (which is kind of what he was implying). |

What annoys me about paleontology is the following It is for kids People will always make fun of you for liking it If you mention anything outside of t-rex (The movie rex!) or any other common dinos people dont care or ask stupid questions. People who think animals such as trilobites are dinosaurs Next is the stupid "Velociraptor" in my local museum (which is unfeathered) is accurate Finally Is how are carnivores get the awesome kewl dino treatment whereas people wont say "aww look at that cute oviraptor protecting its eggs" or "I like diabloceratops because I think its cute and a somewhat odd ceratopsian" Feels great to get this out.

More to do with geology than paleontology specifically, but the comments section for this Nat Geo video on Facebook is cringeworthy nevertheless. Some of the comments demonstrate an abysmal understanding of how science in general works. |

That video itself is actually kind of a failure, since that's not how we aged the Earth but rather how we aged the crystals which we can then use to age specific layers. I'm bad at geology though so don't quote me. But on that topic; National Geographic bothers me an awful lot. They never research anything and constantly spew out poorly written articles with outdated or simply wrong Reconstructions. Every chance they get they make a Jurassic Park reference in an article just as clickbait. |

The video has its problems too, but the comments are what really bother me because they're largely filled with people who think science is about humans pretending they're gods that know everything, when in fact quite the opposite is true. Scientists are aware of how little they truly know about the natural world and that's why our repository of facts and theories needs to be continuously checked for errors, and updated or falsified where necessary.

To be honest, I have to give one comment some props: "Who cares how old the earth is? What does it matter? Why don't we all just try to PRESERVE the earth the best we can." |

BTW does anyone know if what that "geologist" said about radiometric dating is actually true? I doubt it but I'm curious nevertheless. |

I drew a postosuchus (and no not the wdd one) and my friend comes up and says thats an awesome tryannosaurus rex.... I mean I even drew it on all fours and he still thinks its a tyrannosaur. Also the love for british dinosaurs/extinct animals are almost none. The only ones that people care about are iguanadon and meglasaur. Wheres the love for eustreptospondylus? or Rhamphorhynchus huh? and finally my stupid friend who thought a postosuchus was a tyrannosaurus rex even claimed....Acrocanthosaurus atokenis had four nostrils

I suppose I ought to mention that Eustreptospondylus and Rhamphorhynchus are mainstream animals nowadays. Rhamphorhynchus is basically THE pterosaur, after Pteranodon and Quetzalcoatlus. Ever since Eustreptospondylus was in WWD it's been all over the internet. AND THEN there's things like Baryonyx, Hypsilophodon, Eotyrannus... Trust me, of all the dinosaur formations out there, the Wealden is one of the BEST loved by dinosaur enthusiasts. (By the way, no one knows about Megalosaurus anymore. If it hadn't been famed for being "The first named dinosaur" it would have been lost in the public mind with outcasts like along with Poekilopleuron and Chilantaisaurus.) |

^ What AJ said, the Wealden is not that underrated. Underrepresented in medias, I'll give you that, since WWD was the only documentary featuring it IIRC. EDIT: and let's not forget Ichtyosaurus, Plesiosaurus and the other marine reptiles. Edited by Furka, May 15 2016, 02:12 PM.
