What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

I did a quick search online and couldn't find the journal this purportedly comes from, so I assume it's satire.

It mostly stems from the very old paleo-meme of black and white dinosaur monster movies often just using regular old reptiles with a blue screen effect as seen here:

Spoiler: click to toggle

To be fair it really isn't the movie maker's fault due to the Dinosaur Renaissance happening decades later and Crystal Palace being the standard depiction. Most of this image actually lasted well into the 90's until Jurassic Park. Honestly a very dated mindset that I'm surprised still manages to hang around even with the internet.

(If you guys get a chance, watch the MST3K episode on "King Dinosaur. Really lampoons the whole era.)

This Guy had the nerve to replace a Calm and Soothing Episode with One about Giant Predators for his Fan Remake of Walking with Dinosaurs

Rat snake is love... Rat snake is life

When my biology teacher said that Euryapsid reptiles are dinosaurs that evolve to live in water...

It's like, he know what Euryapsid is but doesn't know that they aren't dinosaurs.

One thing that is extremely irritating is that all Yixian formation Pterosaurs are so disappointingly boring and dull

especially considering this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrorhynchoides

''This specimen was originally thought to be from the Jianshangou Bed of the Yixian Formation, dated to about 124.6 million years old

However, the specimen was obtained by amateur collectors and altered to contain a piece of a dromaeosaurid tail before being studied. Lü and Hone (2012) considered it more likely that the holotype of D. curvidentatus was actually found in the Middle Jurassic deposits; the authors note that all other Chinese anurognathids are Jurassic in age, and that Jeholopterus was also initially thought to be a Cretaceous taxon until subsequent studies established it to be from the Jurassic''

Boreopterus and it's kin beg to differ.

Well this is stated many times... The fact that people see some species as boring.

How many flying reptiles do we have today with true powered flight? None. Even if a "boring" species was somehow brought back, we'd all be in awe.

Nothing living in the world is boring...to me at least.

Well there are some species that strike me as more exciting than others, but you're right: it's possible to find something interesting about virtually all life on this planet.

It's not like any species exists for our entertainment, in any case.

it is just that, literally all of the Pterosaurs in the Yixian formation are the same, fish eaters but no fruit eating Tapejarids or tiny insectivores or deadly predators or something more unique

the fact that Dendrorhynchoides was once thought to be part of the Yixian formation but likely was not really does not help things at all

deadly predators
Name me one hyper-carnivorous non-piscivorous pterosaur. And don't say Darwinopterus.

Thalassodromeus. But that's not from the Yixian.

You do realize that you generalized animals based solely on their diet ? Even if some animals ate the same food that doesn't make them monotonous. Just look at how many different bird species we have that eat fish with extremely different lifestyles and looks. And that applies to fruits or insects eaters too.

Also, if a certain nche isn't found in an ecosystem, perhaps it's because there was no place for it ? Animals adapt to the environment they live in, so you can't really call them boring for doing the only right thing they could do.
