What annoys you about paleontology?; Rant on about moronic theories, complaints, or just animals that annoy you.

Sorry about the double post (as I've said before, it's necessary sometimes), but I'm annoyed by the fact that any prehistoric animal that looks the least bit outlandish (therizinosaurs and desmostylians are two good examples) are judged as the fakery of attention-hogging paleontologists by most people I know. Evolution isn't a slave to Homo sapiens' lack of imagination, which is something that many people seem to have trouble understanding. They have an equal amount of trouble understanding that lying for publicity is something very seldom done in most fields of science.

I'm kind of annoyed by the lack of info on the smaller animals from prehistoric ecosystem (Hell Creek in my case). You know, all those little critters like lizards, crocodiles, turtles, mammals and fish which are usually portrayed as background characters, but are the ones that the scene needs to look less empty ?

And don't forget Palaeosawina! The American extinct Komodo dragon that nobody talks about for some reason!

I actually think that's pretty cool-looking (albeit monstrously inaccurate). :P

Is Palaeosawina new? I can't find any info on it.

No, it was discovered back 1928, so it's pretty old. It just doesn't have a lot of information about it because there's not a whole lot of fossils for it.

Even if there was more fossil material, there still probably wouldn't be a lot of info on it since it isn't very impressive-looking. Only the big and badass prehistoric animals get much attention.

Yeah finding info on non non-avian dinosaurs is a pain. Especially when trying to work on a dinosaur project that focuses on not just the dinosaurs.

Though if you look at it from a positive point of view, you could say that dinosaurs are literally so cool that they dwarf six-foot-long venomous lizards.

You could look at it that way, but I still feel that other Mesozoic animals deserve more recognition (obviously dinosaurs deserve every bit of the attention they get, just saying it would be nice if the spotlight could shine on their contemporaries every once in a while).

At least Palaeosaniwa gets enoguh attention so that one can easily find some data on it without having to search for hours.

The second to last post in this section of the Quetz discussion page on Wikipedia. Because, you know, Paul MacCready's 1984 model TOTALLY isn't outdated, and I trust Witton and Habib much more than I do some failed ornithopter experiment from 30+ years ago.

As Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, I'm really not surprised by this.
