I'm sorry but could you clarify a bit? That entirely confuses me.

Megalodon is a bivalve genera, not a shark, but Discovery channel tends to think it refers to a certain shark.

Oh, I see. Thanks for clearing it up.

Speaking of which, can anyone think of other taxa besides Carcharocles that are most commonly referred to exclusively by their specific name? AFAIK it's a unique case in that regard.

Orca and Iguana (even though that ones also used for animals of a different specific) are the only ones that come to mind but I'm sure there are others.

Serval and Caracal. Also Boa constrictor, Mola mola and Tyrannosaurus rex are usually known by both their generic and specific names together.

Some fish here also get referred to with just the specific name sometimes. Wels catfish are an example, sometimes just called glanis or glano (some sort of adaptation in italian).

Papua merdeka!

Orca, Iguana, Caracal etc. aren't so much named after their binomial as the other way around, so their cases are a little different from Megalodon.

Actually Orca is at least a valid case.

EDIT: Oh NVM, I thought you were mistaking Orca for the genus name for some reason. :P
