Am I the only one bothered by the lack of bony rods in its tail? Why'd Utahraptor lose them?
Perhaps Utahraptor was more of an ambush hunter instead of a pursuit hunter, so it lost the bony rods as they weren't adding anything to its ambush tactics?

All "raptors" were ambush hunters (Unenlaginae included, even if of fish), and if anything a more rigid tail would be more useful for turning around during a chase.

This right here. We already knew Utahraptor was bulky, and we already knew it had strange teeth, but the small highly mobile tail is something entirely unexpected.

Someone on the DTF suggested they may have been burrowers, and while we would need more evidence so support such an idea, it does explain the proportions and even the tail.

No good hero is a one-trick phony.

Should we make a separate topic? I'd like to discuss this at length.

Because it was used as concept art for s stop motion model and they decided feathers would be to difficult to sculpt on in a realistic way.
