It seems to be a recurring thing among the "compies" - The legs and underside of the tail were scaly, it seems. Sinosauropteryx, Juravenator and Compsognathus seem to show this. Sinocalliopteryx, although related, had feathers right down to the feet with its longest feathers on the thigh. Interesting.

Funny you mentioned compies capsized right now when i was about to point out that Jura might be more related to Ornitholestes and Coelurus than to compsognathus and sinocallyopteryx from all that we know :P

Between Juravenator, Compsognathus, Sinosauropteryx and SOME tyrannosauroids, I'm finding it very likely that this sort of feather arrangement was the norm for pre-maniraptoran coelurosaurs.

@Ignacio: Mine or BF's?

Yep, me too, basically everything sans some specific exceptions have this arrangement, so its pretty safe to assume that prior to maniraptoriformes, this was the pattern for coelurosaurs.

And now the dots are connected. That's me! :P

Expect an actual paleo-reconstruction update in that gallery some point in the next few weeks. A cetain tyrannosauroid's almost done.

All of the prehistoric mammals on this page. Seriously, these guys don't get enough love. I almost find them more bizarre and interesting than dinosaurs at times.
