Thank you for the set, Azrael!

Yes, both of those I plan to rehome when they're fully weaned in a few weeks. Or at least try to, if I can't find a suitable home that I find good enough I will keep them.

Great to see all your finchs are growing up well and the development of your betta's bowl is great too!

And about the tadpole. Will you keep it once it becomes frog or release it somewhere?

I'll release it. I got it from the shop for free as it came in with the guppies, but it is a native species.

Thank you for the set, Azrael!

So I went to the petshop for a few more corydoras.

I just had to look at the birds, though.

"You have more than enough birds", I would think to myself. "Just look at them".

Until I saw that the store had a cage with four beautiful Java sparrows, two males, two females, one pair of greys and of solid whites.

Javas are possibly my favorite finches, but they are considered an agricultural threat and therefore illegal to transport across state lines. As a result, my state has very few and I had never thought I'd ever see my store get some in. I couldn't not get just one little one... just one.... after all, I may never see them sold again. And once I sell off two of the baby societies, I'll have more room....

So meet Henry, my new guiltily-purchased White Java Sparrow. :3

Looks nice, do you think it will fit nicely with the finches ?
Because small birds can be more evil than one may think.

Javas are bigger than other munias by about 2x, but really docile. I have him with Errol and Apollo now, since I had to split the parents to prevent any new clutches and the chicks are weaned now. Errol is afraid of him just because he is so big, but Apollo, being young and free of prejudice, has warmed up well to him.

Java Sparrow is one of the very docile finch. If the societies don't freak out themselves by the sparrow's intimidating size then it would be fine...

Btw, nice Java! I'd love to have them too! I bet Henry isn't a full grown, he should be much larger.

PS: Oh! And my mother has seen your birds. She asked how often do you clean your cage because it's very clean and neat! We never seen any bird cage as clean as your!

Henry is actually 2 - 3 times as bulky and almost 2/3 longer than Errol, the biggest society, but in this pic, little Apollo is on a branch several inches closer than Henry and there is an illusion of either him being really big or Henry being small. Henry is fully-grown and seems average for his species.

I change the bedding tray every two or three weeks but wipe down the perches and grates every morning. Their food dishes are washed a few times per week.

And tell her I said thank you. :3

He's also, I've noticed, a miserable little bird.

At first I thought he was just settling in, but I've come to realize he is just miserable. He lurks by himself in a corner all day, doesn't make a peep. He isn't sick, he's alert, but he just stays to himself. If another finch tries to sit near him or groom him, he snaps at them and flutters away. He also appears extremely stressed out if anybody goes near the cage and is hardly eating. What I'm getting from this is that this java was probably bred in an aviary and has never seen a closed cage or close contact with humans right near him, nor has he probably ever seen any other species of bird and has no idea how to interact with them. I have no idea what he was fed but it clearly wasn't the pellets, veggies, or seed mix I offer (he only picks out and eats a single kind of seed in it). He just looks sooo sad and I feel terrible for him. I think a big issue is when buying him, I separated him from (I presume) his sister. I asked a birdkeeping forum and apparently Javas form extremely strong pair bonds and get extremely depressed to lose their mates (or whoever they've become bonded with) and because they're so big and a bit more clever than other finches don't relate well to them. So basically, he'll probably adjust to cage life, to trust people a bit more (my spices did) and to tolerate the other finches, but he severely needs a Java companion. If I can pull together enough money, I am going to try my best to buy the little female white Java I left behind, hoping she is still in store. And so my collection will grow, but if that's what it takes to have happy, hoppy little sparrows, I guess it's a necessary evil. :P

And if, after this, I ever try to look at the birds at the petshop again, I need someone to hit me. Hard. Because no more room.

Aw, poor Henry. I hope you manage to scrap together enough money to buy him a friend! I think he'd be very happy to meet his sister again. Good luck :)

I'm going to try to get another Java this weekend. Meanwhile, I'm selling the two unnamed chicks today, and Apollo has proven his gender by beginning to sing (extremely raspy and badly xD ) this morning. One of the chicks I'm rehoming has also, so I know they at least are boys. I believe the other chick is too and Lizzie is a girl but we'll see. It's hard to tell for sure by appearance alone at their age.
