Moar Rambly Bird Stuff So I talked a bit with a rather large-scale java sparrow breeder on the FinchForum site and she says Henry is definitely a male about 5 months old and Michael's a girl about 3 - 4 months old. Henry will start singing around 7 - 9 months I guess, apparently the sparrows start waaay later than societies (Apollo sang at four weeks), at which point the two will probably breed without any issue since they've been paired together before sexual maturity (society finches breed with anyone but most other munias are rather picky with their mates, like my spices who showed no inclination to breed because though they got along, they weren't eachother's original mates and never re-bonded that way). The two sleep together and are all lovey and cuddly at this point. So when/if they nest, probably early in the fall, I'm planning to hand raise at least two babies and tame them into real pets (you just need to take them and feed them for the last 7 days in the nest or so when they have already gotten their feathers in, not the whole time when they're naked and very sensitive to drafts and such). Though even the two adults have gotten remarkably tame. Letting them out every day to fly and hop around the room and get to come to me on their own terms without being stuck in a cage and chased by giant scary hands works wonders. They've gone from being manic and terrified of being within 6 feet of me to happily coming up and letting me put my hand right by them or my face within a foot of them when they're out hopping around on the desks and shelves. They love to fly, always right in unison, in endless loops around the center of the room. They're so lively and big I can't imagine leaving them locked in a cage all day like the societies (they sometimes have the opportunity to free-fly too, but never ever leave their cage, and anyway they're smaller and have a bigger cage anyway to fly in). And they're also - I don't know if it's intentional or random as I've never heard of birds like this - good at only going to the bathroom in their cage; in fact they've never in the last 2 weeks of spending practically all day free to fly around made a mess on anything. They're also as far as I can tell really smart for finches. The societies are cute but not very clever but these guys are always tugging or tossing or playing with something. ![]() ![]() They've gotten nothing on my old rat Oliver (sweetest thing on Earth), whom I had in 2010-11, and of course they're not really in the same sort of pet class as dogs or cats, but out of all the other small pets I've kept (virtually all of them from fish to frogs to snakes to hamsters) the Java sparrows are probably my favorite. |

Java sparrow is always one of my most wanted finchs too, well after the chestnut munia and red avadavat(and domestic canary if you count it as finch). The hand tamed one is really a worth keeping pet! Hope both of your sparrows will be good parents in the future!

Red avadavats - known as strawberry finches here - are so rare they go for over 1,000 dollars a pair. |

They are rare in bird trade here too, but because they are native... They are only 1,000 baht (around 30 dollars) each... ![]() Sadly that most are illegal wild caught... It's really hard to find captive breed ones.

It's been nice out so I've been putting the finches out in the backyard everyday, which they seem to like (and my room can be quiet for once). The lighting is a lot better for photos in any case.![]()

They look so happy ![]() It's also a great source of enrichment for them, for a new outside surrounding gives them a new but temporary place, and the surrounding wild bird sound would probably give em some sensory encounters, and just the relaxing spring breeze.

Errol seems to hate camera this time. ![]() I really like the idea of taking them into the garden. The bird would be happy to see more green and recieve fresh air. Though in Thailand, Greater Coucal might try to snatch them out when you turn your back.... |

I was just thinking that. We don't have any dangerous birds like that here, but other parts of the US have shrikes which are just as mean and dangerous to little birds.
