Oh my god, Steve is hilarious. There needs to be more of Steve. Though all of them are really, really cute and pretty!

Thank you for the set, Azrael!

So this is King Arthur, Random Sidewalk Parakeet, settling into his new, smallish but not likely permanent accommodations (and I don't leave birds just to sit in cages, of course, so even if he's in here for a while, once he's settled he won't be caged often).

Darwin is my rescued Gouldian with only one leg.

And Wally, the Gouldian who cannot fly.

2 of the silverbills.

Grown up finch babies Sylvan and Cirrus who are moulting and look a bit scruffy.

And a group shot.

Lovely. The gouldian finchs are beautiful. Is it secure to let the parakeet free and share space with the finches? *knows nothing about birds keeping*

It will depend on his personality, just as some dogs and cats get along, so do some parakeets with finches. If he shows any sort of aggressive tendencies, he will not be allowed to intermingle with my smaller birds and I'll move him into the spare bedroom to free-fly.

So, today was Arthur's proving day - I let him out into the bird room at 8 this morning - after an hour of sitting on my hand/arm/head/laptop/pants/shoulder/finger and socializing - and he spent the entire day unconfined, climbing like a little green monkey. He didn't fly very much, though when he did he's so big the finches just freeze, thinking he is a hawk come inside or something. The small finches gave him a wide berth but didn't mind him once they got used to him. He too never bothered anyone and only politely moved from cage to cage sampling everyone's foods. Steve does not approve of his new large roommate, who takes his place as alpha. He spent most of the day following an arm's length behind Arthur, hissing and chattering angrily at the budgie, who paid him no mind.

Arthur is still clearly not settled, however, so I will still watch him in case he becomes more snippity when he's more used to his new home. He is very quiet and sleeps often still. He doesn't appear ill, though, and he eats a lot, which is good.

My little one-legged handicap finch Darwin passed away just a few moments ago. He just seemed to have been giving up any will to live the past few days and I think he had finally had enough. He never was able to sleep, because he couldn't get off the ground, so he just sat trembling in fear all through the night. He wouldn't stay put if I moved him off the ground. He must have lived in constant fear, being so immobile, and while Wally blossomed with proper care, he never quite improved. While he almost seemed physically capable of getting about - he would hop and even fly if you bothered him and forced him - something just seemed to never click that he could move on his own accord, after perhaps years in a cage too small for him to move at all. It almost seemed like his body was willing to improve, but not his mind. I think he just stopped eating early yesterday, and once that happens, they go downhill fast.

At least he's free of his pain now, wherever he is, if anywhere - and at least his last days were more comfortable than if I hadn't at least given him that.
