Thank you, Robbie. I do a lot of research before even considering adopting an animal, so that when I do get it I'm fully prepared. After all, these birds didn't exactly ask to be my pets and live in a cage 3,000 miles from their natural habitats; the least I can do is make them as comfortable as I can. They're also a lot more interesting in a largeish, naturalistic cage in a large enough social group. Their behavior is much more interesting than you'd see in a single bird or just a pair kept in a small unfurnished cage fed on a monotonous generic diet, like so many people do. |

Inspired by you, I am going to adopt a bird(maybe this week or next week)And want some tips from you on what bird you think is best for a beginner easy to take care of etc? I asked because I thought you were the best person with knowledge and experience, Both of which I do not have about taking care of birds and which birds are best for beginners and all that ! So I just want a simple bird calm easy to take care of, and I don't care about the coloration as I love all types of birds and animals, Of course you don't have to tell all this stuff if you don't have time.Edited by Robbie, Dec 7 2013, 05:16 AM.

I'd have to say finches are a nice beginner bird, small, quiet, and fairly easy to take care of, though I hear budgies are nice too. Finches need rather large cages and other finches for company, though. Any bird is a big commitment, however. I would say do a lot of online/book research about any animal you might consider adopting. Remember, a pet isn't just something to keep you entertained for a while, it's a longterm commitment and you'll have to take care of that creature for its entire life, as it will depend upon you. I don't know what sort of pets you've had before, but I would not recommend any bird as a first pet; they do require some knowledge and special care, even a very hardy species like a society finch. |

You said that to quiet the wrath of the coon. ![]() Yes I wholly agree that either budgies or finches are the very best beginner birds. I haven't kept finches, but I have had a budgie in the house all my life, and now have two mating pairs and 8 babies. So I'll give you an overview on what I know best:Budgies I think, are about as easy to keep as finches. The only exception being if you have one. Finches are naturally wild, and don't tame easily, even if hand reared I hear,, but budgies, if you get a young enough bird, are extremely social and attach to you lake a child. Even an older bird will to a certain extent But if you have two you need not worry about keeping it company at all, although you can still tame two, it is moderately harder. If you want to know more about birds, I suggest joining the bird group here. And I can answer more of your questions and avoid clogging up sheathers topic.

Canary is also fairly easy to keep too. Unlike many finch specie, canary don't need companion and cam be kept alone in smaller cage. (But I don't support keeping them like that though.) Canary also can be tamed much easier than other finches due the fact that this bird is fully domesticate. Make sure you get a young bird and train it regularly( but don't push the bird, since it can cause stress to the bird.) Also, the song of canary is always the number one in pet bird world!!! I hate budgies. Budgies suck. ![]() *Runs away from Hamikins' rage* Just kidding, Hamikins. :))) Sheather, is it possible to keep budgies and finches in one big cage? Also, what other common pet bird species can be kept in a community aviary? And which ones produce the least bird feather powder, as I'm allergic? I'm thinking of making a larger cage this summer, and I'm wondering about what to put in it.

As I have heard. Most hookbeaks birds can't be kept with finch, exclude the turquoise parakeet(Can you remember this name, T-chu? ) and bouke's parakeet which I often seen being kept with finches. Due the curiousity of the hookbeaks, they will chomp on the finches and make chewing gum out of them.If you want to keep finches, then I think several species of small doves would be fine. Button Quail is good choice as buttom cleaner as well since they will eat the fallen seed. Btw, check the caresheet of each species for more proper info. |

Tyranachu and JMT, as far as I know finches should not be kept with the big hookbills; cockatoos, African greys, and macaws. Budgies, on the other hand, are pretty docile and in any case way less agile than a finch, so in a large enough (I'd say at least 6 feet by 6 feet, though) I'm pretty sure the two would get along fine. Presuming you get a docile finch species, such as any of the munias (both my bird species are of that tribe). Some finches are very aggressive. Finches *the docile sorts* can also be kept with canaries. I wouldn't keep them with lovebirds, conures, or anything of the like as those species can be pushy and are bigger than budgies. I dunno really whether they could cohabitate with cockatiels. As JMT said, any dove or quail would be good too. |
