Basically, people everyday argue whether to save the giant panda or not. You can discuss here. |

In my mind, you should try and save all species to an extent, but Pandas on the whole shouldn't get anywhere near the amount they get. They're an evolutionary dead end, they're going to die out no matter what we do, divert most of the funds to both animals that are part of the echosystem, or which have some chance of surviving. So yeah, try and save them, but not as much as we're currently doing |

Well, I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but I think any endangered animal should be saved, whether useful or not to humans. I understand and agree that giant pandas get a lot more publicity than they deserve, and because of that receive way more attention than perhaps more dire species because of its looks. I'm not asking for that to remain as it is, but I will say that I think all of the animals should be given equal attention no matter what they are, including the panda. I mean, we have the resources. |

We should, as the dominant lifeform on our planet, attempt to care for and preserve all of the creatures on our planet. However, some are in my opinion less worth the effort than others. Yes pandas are cute but they also, in my opinion, seem extremely suited to... extinction. They are carnivores that refuse to eat meat, instead preferring grass which they can barely digest. They always have two babies and let one die. They can't be bred in captivity, it seems, without a ridiculous amount of human intervention (and then rarely at best), and honestly; they are not important to the ecosystem like some other less adorable animals are like the various billfish or many birds or other small or "ugly" animals. I don't see pandas having a future in the highly urbanized world of the distant future like many more hardy creatures will. I don't think we should just let them die - but I mean, at best we're only going to get a completely human-dependent semi-domesticated animal out of this, if we can even get them to breed at all. So that's my two cents. Like any animal they're important - but they get WAY too much attention merely for being cute. |

I also think and wonder why they're even labeled as endangered, when they're actually a little more common than what people think. It's animals like Asiatic Lions need more help, only a few hundred remain in the wild.... |

Pandas actually breed really well in the wild, and not to mention the hundreds China has in their breeding centers and in zoos, I really don't see why they are still considered endangered. Certainly they should still be considered threatened, but really if it was any other animal I'm positive they wouldn't be considered endangered still. |

Pandas would probably do far better than now if they became domesticated to some extent But all in all, as they don't require large attempts of preservation, I'd really like to see the focus shifting to less 'popular' animals that desperately need human help due to human influence - let's say rhinos for a starter.

Animals that deserve the same amount of attention or even more than giant pandas? - Javan and Sumatran Rhinos. - Some subspecies of tigers such as Sumatran and South China Tiger. - Spix's Macaw - Whooping Crane - Florida Panther - Siamese Crocodile - Whales and dolphins - etc. |

Sadly, yes. Human beings are shallow a**holes who don't give a crap about species that are lower down on the "kewt" scale.

In fact,in Chinese many wild animal protection keep in superficial, only the animals with political symbolism can be protected effectively. China has 64 giant panda reserves. But in order to grab the interests in the Yangtze River Basin, the Baiji and Chinese paddlefish have been extinct. Chinese alligator,Chinese sturgeon,Yangtze finless porpoise fall into the difficult position and in the wild still did not receive due protection.A lot of knowledge limited Chinese still think that only the giant panda is in need of protection |

Man. Why is the WWF still treating the giant panda as if it has to be saved or else an ecosystem will collapse?

Agreed. Yes, pandas are cute and I hope the best for them, but when you think about it they don't really have much to offer their ecosystem. |
