it would also be easier to save the gator than the panda: usually reptiles adapt better to captivity, don't have troubles when it comes to food or mates, and are way more prolific. |

The great thing about the Panda, as with most endangered animals that have a high 'cute' factor, is that it makes an excellent flagship species. By protecting Panda habitat, you are also protecting habitat for countless other species that would not otherwise get as much media attention. A reserve dedicated to, say, Parrotbills or Takins or Flying Squirrels simply would not get nearly as much public support and funding as would a reserve dedicated to Pandas (which would, conveniently, also protect the aforementioned species). So yes, I definitely think we should keep protecting the Panda and especially it's habitat, if not for the intrinsic value of the species then for the sake of all the other species that will benefit aswell, especially since there are not a lot of other animals in the area with the same kind of 'star quality' the Panda has. |

Pandas are not the most important animal in the ecosystem, but by protecting their habitat we are protecting some even rarer and ecologically important, such as giant salamanders, pheasants, smaller birds, and monkeys, without the pandas, people would be more open to deforest these areas. But they Chinese probably are using the panda to soften their other conservation mess ups, rhinos and tigers vanishing, the 100,000 sharks each year, and of course the Baiji. |

Don't forget elephants. 10,000 African elephants are killed every year. But by using the panda, I believe even the African Elephant can be saved. |

how ? you can save the other animals because while you protect the panda's environment you protect the environment of those species. how does that help African Elephants ? |

Plus elephants are already receiving a good deal of attention from conservationists. |

We should definitely try to save them no matter what. Im not familiar with wild panda numbers so im not sure how bad it is. Siberian tigers are said to be doomed because there's to much inbreeding and not enough new genes from outside males. One solution was to take a pure bred Siberian tiger from the Toronto zoo and artificially insiminate wild female tigers introducing a new blood line so I imagine the same could save the giant panda. |

By preserving panda habitat, we ensure that other endangered animals that share it's habitat also don't share the same fate: extinction. But I agree people these days don't really care how far down an animal is on the extinction line, as long as it's something cute and cuddly we'll do anything to protect them. I think that the most important thing here is educating people on other animals and their plight. For example, most people think sharks are deadly monsters but are not aware we appear as monsters to them. |

Just because it's like a 'icon' for endangered species, I think it's getting too much attention I think there are MANY more animals that need help, But in my eyes all animals are equal and we should be helping all animals not just some. But it's just a opinion, of course.
