Meet my lovely betta Azul :) Hes a blue Crowntail Betta I believe with some Veiltail in him and hints of a peach and red color. Hes usually very calm and shys away from my finger when I try to get him to follow it. :P

He lives in a small 1 gallon tank for now, since I dont know how old he is. But I will get him a bigger tank maybe so he can have more room to swim. I dont know what to give him for a tank mate but I think a plain minnow or a snail might be efficient.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to raise him better, let me know!

Thank you for the set, Azrael!

Your tank is FAR too small for any tankmate, especially a minnow. Minnows need much more room and filtration, as well as company of their own kind, whereas bettas are solitary and do best alone in small tanks.

You should also look into an aquarium heater - bettas are tropical fish. In addition I would upgrade his space ASAP and get him at least a 5 gallon tank. If that tank were filtered, a snail and/or several shrimp could share it with him, but no more fishes.

I did look into an aquarium heater before Sheather but I didnt have the money for it and I kinda dont now. But my plan is that once I get more money flowing, I might invest more into his home, including a bigger tank.

Ive only had him for a couple of months for now. A snail could likely share his space with him, but yeah probably no more fish.

A heater can be found at Walmart for 9 dollars, but it can only fit in a tank five gallons or more - even so, that costs only 11 dollars or so.

Your betta's probably calm, because he's cold. Warm bettas are very active - a lethargic state is unhealthy. :(

I do know that but hes not lethargic all the time. He doesnt lay at the bottom of the tank a lot, hes swimming around right now actually. I might look into a heater though, its getting colder since I live in the Northwest.

UPDATE:

Yes I am alive. XD But sadly, things are not going well for my betta.

He is sick with bloating, however is scales are fine and I see no pineconing, so it cant be dropsy. He still swims fine so its not swim bladder. Hes still in the gallon tank that I first bought for him. I just dont have the money for him to be upgraded right now. However, on my next paycheck, I plan on getting him a heater so he can finally be in the right temperature.

I have been fasting him for a day and a half and my next idea is to feed him frozen daphnia to help and after that, an epsom salt bath. If he is constipated, it will act as a laxative.

Hopefully he gets better!

Give him a split cooked pea. A canned pea is fine, just rinse it.

The fiber generally fixes this condition. It's caused by overfeeding of fatty foods. Do this for a couple days if need be.

I would be willing to try that. But Ive heard some major bad things about the peas, like their digestive system isnt made to do that.

It's worked for my fish twice in the past. They can handle it; they're carnivores, but they do browse algae and other greenfoods in the wild and in the aquarium.
