The explosive harpoon does enough damage to kill a whale very quickly. I have nothing against the ancient whale hunt - where you actively pursue the whale in a small boat, and when it's an equal fight and has no effect on the population. But this. I know sushis are extremely important to Japanese scientific research [/sarcasm] but they don't have to kill whales for this.

But wouldn't a somewhat significant price drop require a massive killing of rhinos ? Like, tens or even hundreds ?
If this was to me, then that's something we don't know. We have no idea about the actual demand for Rhino horn, and if the current stockpiles (both private and those built up by governments from rhinos who died from natural causes). This guy I quoted breeds 120 rhinos a year, aims to make that 200. He removes the horns without injuring the animal. At this moment, I am neither pro nor contra, at least until there's any further research.

Banned for being rude.

Well, the inuit in Alaska were able to go without whales for 100 years, I don't think they need it.

Thank you for the set, Azrael!

Well here's something we can all agree on: littering is very bad for animals.

Don't litter. Poor thing. Apparently it was rescued and in otherwise decent health now, in a zoo, though the damage is permanent.

Not to mention all the animals that eat our trash, whether it's edible or not.

Thank you for the set, Azrael!

It got caught in a 6 pack soda wrapper as a youngster and its shell was constricted as it grew. :(

Pull my finger!

When you throw 6 pack soda wrappers away, remember to always cut slots in it, so that animals like seagulls or the unfortunate turtle won't get them caught in their bodies.

That is sad.... I have seen turtle with such shell before, but that one is from inbreeding.

One piece of advice. Don't tease animals.
I remember this one time I was at the beach with my cousins on the dock. This woman was fishing. She reeled in the line and started to tease a seagull. The seagull ended up getting a hold of the hook, and my cousin and I had to hold it down and take the hook out of it's mouth.

Also, I've noticed a lot of people are against China's? use of cormorants in fishing. Im sure it's died out a lot now that we have huge trawls for fishing and that stuff but still. The ring doesn't choke the bird, and its placed high enough up the neck so that the bird can still breathe with a fish in it's mouth. It's the same principle as using dogs for herding or something. The cormorants are also tame, so it's not like the cormorants have to be dragged back to the boat... The animal is doing some thing that comes naturally to it, and humans are humanely changing it.
Its not like the cormorants arent allowed a part of the share, and its not like they're in pain...

I fully agree with cormorant fishing.
As long as you don't hurt the animal, it is part of the culture, and something you cannot simply erase.

I support cormorant fishing. The cormorant is actually able to swallow smaller fishes, so it isn't like it is suffering.

cormorant fishing takes places in rivers, lakes and all those places trawlers can't access.
it's a very unique and interesting kind of fishing, and i don't see the birds threated bad at all, the owners threat them as good as a hunter does with his dogs.

I think it's actually really neat and not inhumane. The birds are well-taken care of, still get to swim and dive and eat any small fishes they catch. It's just another variation of using animals to help people, which we do all the time with dogs and horses and yaks and things, so I don't see why this is any different.

At least they're not eating the birds. :P
