Type of Exhibit:

Golden Bamboo Lemurs, being a primate, need plenty of climbing opportunities in their exhibit. Whether they just be tall, climbable trees or man-made wooden climbing structures, there must be some sort of enrichment for them to climb on. They live in the forests of Madagascar, so if they live in a cold climate, an indoor exhibit is recommended, or if they have an outdoor exhibit, a place for them to go if they get too cold would be ideal, but if in a fairly warm climate an outdoor exhibit would be fine. As far as foliage goes, their natural habitat is the spiny forests in Madagascar, so something along those lines would suit them best, though tropical rainforest would be fine as well.

Temperament:

Golden Bamboo Lemurs are generally quite friendly and sociable creatures, depending on where they live and who they live with. In the wild, the young males will normally leave their maternal group and either create their own or join another, so fights between unrelated, sexually mature males are to be expected during breeding season.

Diet:

The golden bamboo lemur feeds on young shoots, creepers and leaf bases of the endemic giant bamboo. Bamboo is pretty much all they eat.

Social Needs:

Golden Lemur Bamboos do best when they are in groups, as back in their natural habitat they live in big groups of 15-30 individuals. Depending on how big the group gets, a separation area is recommended in case fights between males arise in breeding season.

Extra Information:
  • Golden Bamboo Lemurs over time have built up a strong resistance against cyanide, eating around 500 grams of bamboo are eaten every day; this represents roughly 12 times the usual mammalian lethal dose of cyanide.
  • They are native to Madagascar
  • Recent estimates believe that there are under 400 individuals remaining in the wild
  • Their main threats are loss of habitat, hunting by the natives for food and of course, the illegal pet trade.
  • They are only found in the southeast of Madagascar, in Ranomafana National Park.
