Of the four main islands of Mentawai, this species is found on North Pagai, South Pagai and Sipora. In Zoos Type of Exhibit: Because they natural habitat is rainforest, so the exhibit should be a grassy medium sized exhibit with low tropical plants high rainforest trees, and several tree trunks connected with ropes and hammocks. And an indoor exhibit/shelters are needed for wintery days. The fence should be use electric fence since the macaques are excellent climbers and it is easy for them to escape if the exhibit isn't built well. Temperament: They vocal communication is harsh bark & restrained bark. The harsh bark is a loud call emitted by adult males, most frequently around dawn. This is a high-pitched vocalizations consisting of repeated units. This call could function to coordinate group movements and establish the direction of movement. While the restrained bark is a gruff call that is heard by individuals when they are alarmed. The visual communication of this species is silent bared-teeth display. This is where the mouth is opened and the lips are retracted vertically, exposing the teeth. This display is used to initiate affiliative interactions, which differs from another species of macaques. Diet: This species is primarily frugivorous (fruit-eater). They primary food such as figs. Social Needs: Mentawai macaque groups are flexible, but usually consist of between 5 and 25 individuals. Larger groups may split up into subunits to forage, and also to sleep. However, they are also seen contentedly foraging in mixed-species groups with the Mentawai Island leaf-monkey (Presbytis potenziani). It appears that this species has a unimale social system. The Mentawai macaque group tends to consist of a single adult male amongst a group of mature females and their young. Solitary males occasionally try to usurp ageing male group leaders in order to mate with the females, and meet with aggression to establish dominance. Extra Information:
