In NZ, wild dogs are a serious threat, killing in some cases around (I think) 200 kiwi in one night. I have a cat and he goes outside, but he doesn't hunt. At all. I had some fish in an outdoor pond, and he didn't give them a second look. he even drank out of their pond so while some cats should be kept indoors I agree, I think it depends on the individual.

You mean all dogs in NZ. yes. But only wild dogs, which arn't fed and are starving. Cats, who are fed, can escape the back yard and each kill 65 animals per year. The thing is is that people here like to open windows more then people in the U.S. as well. You guys use air conditioning. EDIT: Cats have contributed to the extinction of 9 native bird species [3]. Cats impact on 33 endangered native bird species [4]. One feral cat killed 102 endangered native short tail bats in a week [5]. Cats kill native birds. In our cities domestic cats kill native birds faster than they can possibly breed [6]. Around 40% of New Zealand’s native land-birds are already extinct, and of the ones remaining 37% are endangered. [7] Cats arn't worth it at all. At least keep them indoors aswell. EDIT I'm sory but this:
I know it is nature. But that is pathetic.

But wait, hamikins, what are you trying to say? I know cats have done harm to many species, but so has dogs. Cats kill birds and mice, it's nature. My cat does it too, she is the nicest cat ever but yes, she is a killer.. It's nature, all cat species hunt and catch live pray. The person letting the cat torture a bird, I have nothing good to say.. It's just cruel and awful.. I've saved many mice and birds from my cat, I would never let her torture them in front of me

But cats kill for the pure pleasure of killing, while dogs will not kill just for pleasure. IIRC, only domestic cats, dolphins and men kill for pleasure. |

You wouldn't bother anyone with your opinion ![]() Yea, cats do kill for pleasure. At least domestic cats who hunt birds and mice. I think they find it fun hunting, I don't think they like the killing part. My cat usually brings a mouse home and plays with it, trying to catch it over and over. It's not often she actually kills an animal

I think that cats kill prey for pleasure is caused by humans have fed them well, so that they aren't hungry enough to eat. However, their killing instinct still remain, so they keep killing and killing but don't hungry enough to eat its prey. This behavior doesn't happpen only with cats, but also many hyperactive predators such as stoat, weasel, mink and otter as well, actually, most active predators that smart enough to know the word "fun". |

One theory is that cats think they are still kittens and are 'practicing' killing for when they are older and independant. And I try not to bother with my own opinion. But here: No it's not cat's I dislike the most. It is certain cat lovers. Oh yeah, say that really of handly, they 'play' with animals. Did you watch that video? Desensitized people. Well, my opinion is that people have very stupid ideas about cats, and a few about dogs. I think cat's should have never been domesticated. And they should be 'phased out'. And anyway, I get from how you talk that you think all preditors are like this. Well I'm not surprised if they are. Then I'll dispise them all. Even if they are oh so cute. I know, I foreign concept. You can tell I'm so angury after watching that video. I will never forget it. EDIT: Actually reading my post again sounds like I'm not that. But I am. Edited by Hamikins, Jan 14 2014, 02:14 PM.

Hunt-killing and eating are two separate instinct, triggered by different baits (eating is driven by hunger, hunting by sight). and even if the cat doesn't want to kill the prey, the damage it does to it while playing is often too serious for the small animals to handle. |

On conclusion: Every uncontrolled cat or dog is a predator that causes disbalance in the environment due to benefits from being supported and loved by naked apes. They're being fed, housed, bred, treated in case of trauma/disease, introduced to new habitats, and have enough roots in popular culture to became anthropomorphised (this often saves their lives, so one cannnot simply kill a stray cat that eats chickens, because there's similar beloved cat at home) Edited by Elephas Maximus, Jan 14 2014, 03:16 PM.
